Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: German adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < German adj. + -ist suffix, partly after German Germanist expert in German law (1754 or earlier), expert in German philology and history (Grimm 1846, as a conscious extension of the legal sense), itself perhaps after Romanist (although this is apparently first attested later with reference to linguistics and slightly later with reference to law: see Romanist n.). Compare earlier Germanism n. 2. Compare also earlier German n. 1c.
An expert in or student of German language, literature, history, or thought; a person with knowledge of Germany or German; an expert in or student of Germanic. Also: a supporter or favourer of Germany or things German.
