Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek προσωπεῖον.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek προσωπεῖον mask ( < ancient Greek πρόσωπον face (see prosopon n.) + -εῖον, suffix forming nouns), with remodelling of the ending after Latin nouns in -ium. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (prǫsōu·piɒ̆m) /prɒˈsəʊpɪəm/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
Mivart's term for: the bones of a parrot's skull forming the upper mandible of the bill.

1895 St. G. Mivart in Proc. Zool. Soc. 365 The Bony Beak or Prosopium. [Note] By this term I intend to denote the whole ossified mass in front of the cranio-facial articulation and the articulations of the zygomata and palatines. It includes the premaxilla, the maxillæ, maxillo-palatine processes, the nasals, and the ethmoidal and turbinal ossifications of the beak.
