Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paenitūdō.
Etymology: < classical Latin paenitūdō regret, in post-classical Latin also repentance (from 4th cent.), pains, weariness (mid 8th cent.) < paenitus , past participle of paenitēre to repent (see penitent adj. and n.) + -tūdō -tude suffix. Compare Middle French pénitude repentance (c1370).It is possible that quots. a1538 and 1983 do not show the same word as quot. 1657.
