Etymology: < pricking n. + up adv.1, in sense 1 after to prick up at prick v. 18.
1. Plastering. The scoring of a first coat of plaster so as to afford a hold for the next; (the application of) a first coat of plaster which is afterwards to be so scored. Cf. prick v. 18.

1823 P. Nicholson New Pract. Builder 373 Pricking-up is similar to laying, but is used as a preliminary to a more perfect kind of work.
1832 Encycl. Brit. V. 678/2 In three-coat plastering on laths..the first [coat] is called the pricking up.
1940 Chambers's Techn. Dict. 672/2 Pricking-up, the operation of scoring the surface of the first coat to provide a key for the next: the whole operation of laying and scoring such a coat.
2005 S. Emmitt & C. A. Gorse Barry's Introd. Constr. Buildings 542 Fir lath is covered with three coats of plaster. The first coat is spread and forced between the laths so that it binds to it. This coat is described as pricking up.
2. Basket-making. The action of turning up (esp. willow) stakes after their insertion in the base of a basket.
