单词 prick-madam
释义

prick-madamn.

Brit. /ˈprɪkmadəm/, U.S. /ˈprɪkˌmædəm/
Forms: 1500s–1600s pricke-madame, 1500s–1600s prick-madame, 1600s prick-my-dame, 1600s– prick-madam.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: prick v., madam n.
Etymology: < prick v. + madam n., apparently with reference to the astringent taste of the stonecrop's leaves. Apparently related to Middle French, French (now regional) trique-madame stonecrop (1543), although the exact nature of the relationship is unclear; the French word is apparently an unexplained variant of tripe-madame (1549 as †trippe-madame ; < trippe , imperative singular of tripper , variant of triper to leap, hop (see trip v.) + madame madam n.). Compare later pricket n. 4, trick-madam n., trip-madam n.
Now chiefly historical and English regional.
Any of several stonecrops (genus Sedum); esp. biting stonecrop, S. acre, and reflexed stonecrop, S. reflexum. Cf. pricket n. 4, trick-madam n.
