Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pro tanto.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pro tanto on that account (c1332 in a British source), literally ‘for so much’ < classical Latin prō pro prep. + tantō , ablative of tantum , neuter of tantus so much (see tanti adj.).
