Origin: Apparently a borrowing from German. Etymon: German Proband.
Etymology: Apparently < German Proband examinee, test subject, also used in genealogy and human genetics for a person providing a point of reference (1923 in the passage translated in quot. 1931) < classical Latin probandus that must be proved or demonstrated, worthy of praise or approval, use as adjective of gerundive of probāre prove v. Compare classical Latin probandum something worthy of praise or approval, use as noun of neuter of probandus.
Medicine and Genetics.
The individual with whom the investigation of a family for a genetic disorder or other inherited trait begins; the first member of a family to be diagnosed with a hereditary disease or trait. Cf. propositus n. 3.
