Etymology: Perhaps shortened < probable adj. Middle Eng. Dict. at probāble adj. interprets quot. 1439 as a transmission error for probable adj. Compare Middle English probaly , apparently a transmission error for probably adv. (once in Pecock, who also uses probabili, probabily in the same text):c1443 R. Pecock Reule of Crysten Religioun (1927) 111 Ful ofte a man..chesiþ..raþer to haue deeþ þan lijf..for certyn hopis of good which ful probaly he knowiþ or bileuyth forto come þer bi.
