Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek προαύλιον.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek προαύλιον vestibule < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + αὐλή court (see aulic adj.) + -ιον, diminutive suffix.Not fully naturalized in English.
Archaeology and Architecture.
A vestibule or forecourt in a church or temple; spec. a portico or colonnade opening into the narthex.
