Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of prince n. + wood n.1 In β form < prince n. + wood n.1 The trees and timbers are apparently so called on account of their stately appearance and high-quality wood (compare quot. 1725). Compare kingwood n. at king n. Compounds 4a.
Any of several tropical American timbers: (originally) † = kingwood n. at king n. Compounds 4a (obsolete); (later) the dark-coloured, light-veined timber of two West Indian trees, Cordia gerascanthus (family Boraginaceae) and Exostema caribaeum (family Rubiaceae) (also called Spanish elm); either of the two West Indian trees producing this wood.
