Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin praetextus , -ous suffix;, pretext n.1, -uous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin praetextus (u- stem: see pretext n.1) + -ous suffix. In later use probably re-formed < pretext n.1 + -uous suffix. Compare pretextual adj. and earlier pretexted adj.1
