Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Primulin.

Etymology: < German Primulin (F. L. Hünefeld 1836, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. 7 58) < scientific Latin Primula , genus name (see primula n.) + German -in -in suffix¹, so called because it was first obtained from the roots of the cowslip, Primula veris.

Chemistry. Now rare.

A plant pigment usually isolated as a violet or brown chloride.Primulin is an anthocyanidin. Formula C₂₃H₂₅O₁₂Cl.
