单词 primogenitor
释义

primogenitorn.

Brit. /ˌprʌɪmə(ʊ)ˈdʒɛnᵻtə/, U.S. /ˌpraɪmoʊˈdʒɛnədər/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin primogenitor.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin primogenitor eldest son (1361), formerly also thought to occur in sense ‘ancestor’ (see note) < classical Latin prīmō (adverb) at first, first + genitor genitor n., after post-classical Latin primogenitus primogenit n. Compare Middle French primogeniteur (1340), Spanish primogenitor (second half of the 15th cent.; usually in plural), both in sense ‘ancestor, forefather’, Italian primogenitore (a1574 denoting Adam as the forefather of humankind; 1891 in plural primogenitori in general sense ‘ancestors’).The former reading post-classical Latin primogenitores ancestors (Vetus Latina) is now generally discounted as a false reading for progenitores (Vulgate, 2 Timothy 1:3).
A person from whom another is originally descended; the earliest ancestor, esp. of a people; a forefather, a progenitor. Also in extended use.
