单词 autobiography
释义

autobiographyn.

Brit. /ˌɔːtə(ʊ)bʌɪˈɒɡrəfi/, U.S. /ˌɔdəˌbaɪˈɑɡrəfi/, /ˌɔdoʊˌbaɪˈɑɡrəfi/, /ˌɑdəˌbaɪˈɑɡrəfi/, /ˌɑdoʊˌbaɪˈɑɡrəfi/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, biography n.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + biography n., perhaps after German Autobiographie (1756 in Greek characters as αὐτοβιογραϕία, subsequently from 1793 or earlier). Compare French autobiographie (1820), which may show a borrowing < German rather than < English (see the detailed discussion in Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch XXV. 1163/2).
An account of a person's life given by himself or herself, esp. one published in book form. Also: the process of writing such an account; these considered as a literary genre. Also in extended use.
