Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < prime adj. + gap n.1Quot. 1794 is apparently a copy of a late 15th-cent. document, but the original has not been traced. Eng. Dial. Dict. at cited word also records a form prymegap . This is probably a normalization of prymegappe , which is recorded by T. Tapping (in the source cited in quot. 1851) as a variant spelling; the latter form appears to come from a 17th- or 18th-cent. source, but cannot be dated precisely, as Tapping does not give a source for it.
