Etymology: < French †prestoler (a1506 in Middle French; 1532 in Rabelais in the passage translated in quot. 1653; < classical Latin praestōlārī to wait for, await < praestō (adverb) near at hand, in readiness (see prest adj. and adv.) + a suffix of uncertain origin, perhaps also seen in ambulāre amble v.) + -ate suffix3.The passage in Rabelais is part of a humorous dialogue, in which a university student with a rural background who uses an extremely Latinate, ‘inkhorn’ form of French in order to show off his learning tells Pantagruel what he and his fellow students like to do in their spare time in Paris.
