Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin praestāt-, praestāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin praestāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of praestāre to present, show, to vouch for, take responsibility for (see prest v.1). Compare much earlier prestation n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (pre·steit) /ˈprɛsteɪt/.
Roman Law. Obsolete.
transitive. To undertake, take upon oneself, or take responsibility for; to manifest.
