Etymology: < pre- prefix + look v. Compare earlier forelook v. N.E.D. (1907) records as ‘evidently some error’ and suggests a corrected reading prikked (in fact, a reading prekked would be preferable: compare β forms at prick v.); the original editor of the manuscript, G. F. Nott, emends to pressed (see Wks. Howard & Wyatt(1815) 397). More recent Surrey scholarship, however, accepts the manuscript reading.
