Etymology: < German Prehnit (attributed to A. G. Werner by M. H. Klaproth 1787, in Schriften der Gesellschaft naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin 8 211) < the name of Colonel Hendrik Prehn (1733–85), Dutch commandant at the Cape of Good Hope, who brought specimens of this mineral to Europe + German -it -ite suffix¹.Compare the following:1795 J. G. Schmeisser Syst. Mineral. I. 147 Prehnit... This stone is called after Captain Prehn, who brought it first to Europe in the year 1783, from the Cape.

Mineralogy.

A mineral of the orthorhombic crystal system which consists of a hydrated silicate of calcium and aluminium, Ca₂Al₂Si₃O₁₀(OH)₂, and occurs as pale green, yellowish, or colourless crystals in spherular aggregates, or as vitreous masses.
