Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praeceptor.
Etymology: < classical Latin praeceptor teacher, instructor, in post-classical Latin also head of a preceptory of Knights Templar or Hospitaller (frequently from late 12th cent. in British sources) < praecept- , past participial stem of praecipere (see precept n.) + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French, French précepteur teacher, tutor (c1465), Italian precettore teacher, tutor (1342).
1. Probably: an expert in the art of writing or the composition of prose. Obsolete.
