The holder of a prebend; (formerly) a canon of a cathedral or collegiate church who obtained income from a prebend; (in later use) an honorary canon in any of various Anglican cathedrals.Originally, each canon had a praebenda or share in the funds of the church to which the clergy-house was attached; in later times when the custom grew up of assigning a particular estate for the support of a particular canon, the latter received also the designation of prebendary from the estate so assigned, e.g. ‘Canon of St Paul's and Prebendary of Finsbury’. By the Ecclesiastical Duties and Revenues Act of 1840, the members of a cathedral chapter (except the dean) are now called canons (see canon n.² 2a); but the title of prebendary is retained in some cathedrals for some members of the chapter.
