Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin praegermināt- , praegermināre ; pre- prefix, germinate v.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin praegermināt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of praegermināre to sprout early < prae- pre- prefix + germināre germinate v. In later use < pre- prefix + germinate v.

1. intransitive. To germinate early or before another plant; to begin the process of germination. rare before 20th cent.
