单词 preordain
释义

preordainv.

Brit. /ˌpriːɔːˈdeɪn/, U.S. /ˌpriɔrˈdeɪn/
Forms: 1500s prëordaine, 1500s preordayne, 1500s–1600s praeordaine, 1500s–1600s preordaine, 1600s– preordain; also Scottish pre-1700 preordine, pre-1700 preordone.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pre- prefix, ordain v.
Etymology: < pre- prefix + ordain v., probably after either post-classical Latin praeordinare pre-ordinate v. or Middle French preordener, preordiner (late 15th cent. or earlier; French †préordiner ), Middle French preordonner (1412; French préordonner (now rare, perhaps obsolete)). Compare Spanish preordenar (early 15th cent. or earlier; also †preordinar ), Italian preordinare (a1342). Compare later pre-ordinate v.
transitive. To ordain or appoint beforehand ; to decide or determine (an outcome, course of events, etc.) in advance, esp. by divine will or fate; to predestine, predetermine. Frequently in passive.
