Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French presbytère.
Etymology: < French presbytère (1549 in Middle French; earlier as presbitère (1381 or earlier in Middle French)), ultimately < post-classical Latin presbyterium presbyterium n. Compare Anglo-Norman and Old French presbitere , presbiterie , French †presbytère part of a church containing the choir (see presbytery n.).
In France and French-speaking regions: the house of a Roman Catholic priest. Cf. presbytery n. 6.
