Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin praeelectus ; pre- prefix, elect adj.
Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin praeelectus, past participle of praeeligere to choose before, prefer (Vetus Latina; from 8th cent. (frequently from 12th cent.) in British sources; < classical Latin prae- pre- prefix + ēligere to select: see elect adj.), and partly < pre- prefix + elect adj.
Now rare.
Chosen beforehand or before others; chosen in preference to others, esp. by God. Also as n. (with singular or plural agreement) and chiefly with the.
