Brit. /ˌpriːdᵻˈlɛkʃn/, U.S. /ˌprɛdlˈɛkʃ(ə)n/, /ˌprɛdəˈlɛkʃ(ə)n/, /ˌpridlˈɛkʃ(ə)n/, /ˌpridəˈlɛkʃ(ə)n/
Forms: 1600s– predilection, 1700s– predelection (irregular), 1800s– predeliction (irregular).
Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Italian. Apparently partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian predilezione; French prédilection.
Etymology: Apparently partly < Italian predilezione (1611 in Florio as predilettione ) < pre- pre- prefix + dilezione dilection n., and partly < French prédilection (1461 in Middle French) < pré- pre- prefix + dilection dilection n. Compare post-classical Latin praedilectio (c900, rare). Compare earlier predilect adj. and its Latin etymon. The persistent spellings predelection , predeliction are perhaps by mistaken identification with del- in delight n., delectation n., etc.
A preference or particular liking for something; a bias in favour of something; a predisposition, a proclivity. Also: the fact of having such a liking or preference.
