Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French praline, prasline.
Etymology: < French praline, †prasline confection made by browning in boiling sugar (in prasline de citron, prasline de violette (both 1662)), almond treated in this way (1679; compare earlier amande à la prasline (1667)), sweet or chocolate filled with a paste made from such almonds (1846 or earlier), also (chiefly regional (Belgium)) any kind of filled chocolate < the name of the Maréchal du Plessis-Praslin (1598–1675), whose cook invented the confection.
Originally: a confection made by browning almonds or other nuts in boiling sugar; a nut prepared in this way. Now chiefly: a smooth paste made from this confection, often used as a filling in chocolates; a chocolate filled with this paste.Also applied to other confections prepared in a similar way: see quots. 1809 and 1893.
