Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: post- prefix, clitellum n., -ian suffix.
Etymology: < post- prefix + clitellum n. + -ian suffix, after French postclitellien (E. Perrier 1872, in Nouvelles archives du Muséum d'Hist. Nat. 8 42). With use as noun compare preclitellian n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (-kləite·liăn) /-klaɪˈtɛlɪən/.

Posterior to the clitellum; (of an earthworm) having the openings of the sperm ducts posterior to the clitellum.

1879 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 168 265 The genus Acanthodrilus is especially characterised amongst the Postclitellian Lumbricidæ by the possession of two pairs of male generative orifices which are placed in the 17th and 19th, 18th and 20th, or 19th and 21st segments.
1895 Amer. Naturalist 29 755 The dorsal blood vessel arises from the sinus in somites xiii and xiv and hence is post-clitellian.

1888 F. E. Beddard in Encycl. Brit. XXIV. 683/2 Perrier divided earthworms into three groups:—(1) Preclitellians..; (2) Intraclitellians..where the male pores are within the clitellum; and (3) Postclitellians.
