Etymology: < post-classical Latin Chinenses, plural of Chinensis Chinese (1574 or earlier), alteration of Sinensis (1571 or earlier: see note), after the name of China (see China n.1). Compare earlier Chinese n.Post-classical Latin Sinensis is < Sinae (plural), denoting the inhabitants of China (see Sinaean adj.) + -ensis -ese suffix.
