Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: potato n., ring n.1
Etymology: < potato n. + ring n.1 The name was apparently given to the rings long after the period of their manufacture, on the (almost certainly unfounded) assumption that they were used specifically either to support a bowl containing potatoes or even to hold together a pile of potatoes.

A name given to an 18th- or 19th-century Irish dish ring, a hoop of silver often elaborately chased or decorated with pierced and repoussé work, and used as a stand for a circular bowl or the like.
