Esp. in the 17th cent.: a stopping place, station, or stage on a post road, to which the mail was carried from the previous stage and from which it was forwarded to the next; (also) the distance between any two of these places. Now historical.At each post-stage fresh post-horses were kept in readiness for carrying the mail, or for the use of express messengers and private travellers.
