Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch pots-wal-visch.
Etymology: < Dutch †pots-wal-visch (1599; probably < pot pot n.1 + †walvisch whalefish n., with unexplained -s , perhaps simply representing the genitive singular ending; compare slightly later potvis pot-fish n.), with alteration after pot n.1 and fish n.1 Compare German †Pottwalfisch (1795 or earlier; rare). Compare later pot-fish n.
Obsolete.
The sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. Cf. pot-fish n.
