Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ponti- , pōns , -fic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ponti-, alternative stem of pōns bridge (see pons n.) + -fic suffix; but used in sense of classical Latin pontificius (see pontificious adj.). Compare pontifex n.In sense 4 used punningly or allusively with reference to the etymology.
1. Of, belonging to, or relating to a chief priest or pontiff, esp. the Pope; of or relating to the papacy, papal; pontifical.
