释义

Pontacn.

Brit. /ˈpɒntak/, U.S. /ˈpɑnˌtæk/
Forms: 1600s pontaque, 1600s–1700s pontack, 1600s– pontac, 1800s pontacq, 1800s pontak. Also with lower case initial.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French Pontac.
Etymology: Apparently < French Pontac (although this is not attested in dictionaries of French until later (a1798)), further etymology uncertain: perhaps < de Pontac, the name of an influential French winemaking family.Compare the following:1988 D. Hughes et al. Compl. Bk. S. Afr. Wine (ed. 2) 108 Since the making of this Pontac coincided with the advent of the Hugenot immigration.., it has been speculated that they may have brought cuttings of the vine with them, perhaps naming it after the famous Pontac family, who were important vineyard owners in the Médoc.
In early use: a type of French red wine. Later: spec. a dark red wine similar to port, produced mainly in South Africa; (also) the distinctive red-fleshed variety of grape from which this wine is made. Also attributive in Pontac wine, Pontac grape. In early use the word may have referred to the sort of wines produced by the Pontac family in the Bordeaux region of France. The Pontac grape is thought to have originated in south-west France and to have been introduced to South Africa in the late 17th cent. It is now rarely grown.
