Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pont.
Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman pont, pount, etc., and Old French pont (c1260 in Old French; earlier in Anglo-Norman as punt (c1100); French pont ) < classical Latin pont- , pōns bridge (see pons n.); in later use reborrowed < French pont. Compare Old Occitan pon, pont (c1150; Occitan pont), Catalan pont (13th cent.), Spanish puente (1043), Portuguese ponte (13th cent.), Italian ponte (1253). Compare also Welsh pont bridge (12th cent.; < Latin).Earlier currency of the word is implied in place names, as Pontefratch (a1135), Pumfrate (a1193) Pontefract, West Riding, Yorkshire (compare Pontefract n. and Pomfret n.2). Compare the following renderings of foreign place names:c1450 J. Capgrave Solace of Pilgrims (Bodl. 423) (1911) 12 Pont adriane..stand undir adrianes temple.a1470 T. Malory Morte Darthur (Winch.
