单词 portrayer
释义

portrayern.

Brit. /pɔːˈtreɪə/, U.S. /pɔrˈtreɪər/
Forms: Middle English portreyour, Middle English purtrayour, Middle English purtreoure, Middle English purtreyour, late Middle English portraer, late Middle English 1600s– portrayer, 1800s pourtrayer.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French pourtraieur ; portray v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Probably partly < Middle French pourtraieur person who paints or draws pictures or portraits (1350; also as portrayeur , pourtrayeur (both 16th cent.); French †portrayeur ; earlier in sense ‘that which is used to paint or draw’ (c1275 in Old French (Picardy) as portraiour ); < portraire , pourtraire portray v. + -eur , -our : see -or suffix), and partly independently < portray v. + -er suffix1.Earlier currency of the word is perhaps implied by the surnames Nic. le Portreour de Oxon (1312), Geoffr. le Purtreour (1340), although it is unclear whether these should be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or Anglo-Norman word.
Originally: a person who paints or draws pictures or portraits. Later also: a person skilled in verbal description, dramatic representation, etc.
