A small passerine bird, Spiza americana (family Cardinalidae), having a stout bill and grey and brown plumage, with a black throat and yellow breast in the breeding male, nesting in summer in the North American Midwest and migrating south in winter. Also called little meadowlark.By earlier 19th-century writers called black-throated bunting.
