Etymology: < French beaucoup (noun) a large quantity (1379 in Middle French; also late 14th cent. in beaucoup de many; 13th cent. in Old French as biau cop in sense ‘large and beautiful thing’), (adverb) very much, very (1465) < biau , beau beau adj. + cop , coup blow, strike (see coup n.1).Rare before the 20th cent.; reinforced or reborrowed as a result of the stationing of British and American troops in France during the First World War (1914–18).
