Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English gefyndig.
Etymology: Apparently originally (in quot. OE at sense 1) aphetic < Old English gefyndig capable (only in manuscripts of Ælfric's Grammar; early Middle English ifundi ) < the Germanic base of y- prefix + an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the Germanic base of find v. + the Germanic base of -y suffix1; compare yfind v. Subsequently perhaps a borrowing from early Scandinavian (compare Swedish fyndig (of a person) resourceful, astute, (of speech) meaningful, telling, (of land, etc.) rich in mineral resources, Old Danish fyndig strong, good (Danish fyndig weighty, valuable, solid, (of speech) powerful, telling, punchy, (of milk) rich, creamy)), cognate with Dutch vindig ingenious, Middle Low German vundich resourceful, cunning, Middle High German vündec , vündic ingenious (German findig inventive, clever, fündig rich in resources, productive) < an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the Germanic base of find v. + the Germanic base of -y suffix1.
