Etymology: < Middle French poupine doll, puppet (1438 or earlier; earlier in Old French as popine (early 13th cent.); French (now regional) poupine ) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *puppa (see poppet n.) + -ine -ine suffix⁴. Compare post-classical Latin popina (c1200 in a French source). Perhaps compare also Middle French, French poupin baby (first half of the 16th cent., also in sense ‘dandy, fop’; subsequently from the early 19th cent.), ultimately from the same unattested post-classical Latin form.
