Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin trepidāt- , trepidāre ; -ious suffix; trepidation n., -ious suffix.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin trepidāt-, past participial stem of trepidāre trepidate v. + -ious suffix, or < trepidat- (in trepidation n.) + -ious suffix. Compare earlier trepidatory adj.
Apprehensive, nervous; filled with trepidation.
