Originally: a virus isolated from mouse tumours which produces multiple tumours when administered to newborn rodents. In later use: any member of the genus Polyomavirus, comprising non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses which typically cause persistent, asymptomatic infections of specific mammalian or avian hosts, but which also may have oncogenic potential, esp. in species other than the natural host, or when acquired at birth; (in form Polyomavirus) the genus itself. The genus Polyomavirus was formerly included with Papillomavirus in the family Papovaviridae, but is now the single genus of the family Polyomaviridae.The main human polyomaviruses are BK virus and JC virus, which may cause renal disease with haemorrhagic cystitis and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, respectively, in immunocompromised patients.
