单词 foot-saunt
释义

foot-sauntn.

Forms: 1500s foote-saunt, 1600s foote-st (without point), 1600s foote-st. (with point).
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: foot n., English saunt , cent n.2
Etymology: < foot n. + saunt, variant of cent n.2 Compare later cent-foot n. at Compounds. All documented uses of this word, as of cent-foot n. at cent n.2 Compounds, appear to involve sexual innuendo. For further discussion see G. Williams Dict. Sexual Lang. & Imagery Shakespearean & Stuart Lit. (1994) at cent. The forms foote-st., foote-st are apparently intended as abbreviations for foote-saint (compare the variant saint at cent n.2 Forms), arising from association of the second element of the compound with saint n. (compare st. n.). Compare also the following:1615 R. Brathwait Strappado 50 If she allure thee to some wanton sport.., care not for't Let St. foote be (such follies lust affoord) For fairest play is euer aboue boord.
Obsolete. rare.
Apparently: flirtation or amorous dalliance involving the feet, of the kind that may occur beneath the table when playing cards; a type of (notional) card game which accompanies this (cf. cent n.2). Cf. footsie n.1 2a.
