Etymology: < Middle French povretet (1326), poevreteit (1466; c1190 in Old French as poverteit ), variants of povreté poverty n. Compare earlier poverty n., poorness n., poorhead n.With the monosyllabic first element compare poor adj. and the γ forms at poverty n.; it is uncertain whether this reflects an unattested variant in Anglo-Norman, or a phonetic development within the present word, or alteration after forms of either poor adj. or poverty n. With the ending compare bounteth n., dainteth n., and idleteth n.
