Etymology: Origin uncertain, as is the relationship to the slightly later synonym rum n.2 Perhaps an alteration of rumbullion n.1, after combustion n. (compare combustion n. 5b, and see discussion at rum n.2), with reference to the effect of the drink on the drinker.
