Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: poly- comb. form, -carp comb. form, -ic suffix.
Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -carp comb. form + -ic suffix. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Polycarpicae, former class name ( F. G. Bartling Ordines naturales plantarum (1830) 220). Compare earlier polycarpous adj. and also monocarpic adj.
Botany.
1. Of a plant: flowering and fruiting several or many times during its life cycle. Contrasted with monocarpic adj.
