Etymology: < Spanish población settlement, population, town, city, village (1238 or earlier; 1129 in sense ‘emigration’) < poblar (see poblador n.) + -ación -ation suffix. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciations (pǫblas·n, -þ·n) /poblaˈsjon/ /-ˈθjon/.
