单词 pnicogen
释义

pnicogenn.

Brit. /ˈpnɪkə(ʊ)dʒ(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈpnɪkoʊˌdʒɛn/, /ˈpnɪkoʊdʒ(ə)n/
Forms: 1900s– pnicogen, 1900s– pnictogen.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πνίγειν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πνίγειν to choke, stifle, to bake, stew (of unknown origin), in allusion to the properties of nitrogen or phosphorus compounds + -o- connective + -gen comb. form, perhaps after halogen n. The form pnictogen may arise by analogy with pnictide n.The form pnic- does not directly represent the stem form of ancient Greek πνίγειν (although see etymological note s.v. pnictide n.). The adoption of this word as an etymon could perhaps be subsequent to the informal coinage of the word in some other way, possibly from p- (in phosphorous adj.) and -nic- (in arsenic n.).
Chemistry.
Any of the elements in group 15 of the periodic table, comprising nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth.
