Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: French poire sauvage.
Etymology: Short for Canadian French poire sauvage, literally ‘wild pear’, in the same sense < poire pear n. + sauvage savage adj., so called from the resemblance of the flowers to those of the pear.
Canadian. Now rare.
(The blue-black berry of) any of several North American shrubs of the genus Amelanchier (family Rosaceae), resembling the pear in their white flowers. Cf. saskatoon n.
