Etymology: < pneumo- comb. form + -cele comb. form. Compare French pneumocèle (1859 or earlier in a work title), Italian pneumocele (1835). Compare earlier pneumatocele n. With sense 2 compare earlier pneumonocele n. at pneumono- comb. form .
Medicine.
1. An abnormal, localized collection of air or gas in a part of the body (cf. pneumatocele n. 1); esp. an expansile air-filled lesion of a paranasal sinus.
